HP launches RedHat Linux desktop PC

It seems Hewlett Packard can't let Dell sell its Ubuntu preloaded systems without giving it a shot of it own. Yesterday HP announced that it will start selling RedHat (RHT) Linux based PCs.

"With the cost of proprietary systems continuing to rise, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Desktop minimises acquisition and ongoing deployment costs, leaving more money and resources for other high-value projects and tasks,” said Max McLaren, General Manager at Red Hat in Australia and New Zealand, taking a clear dig at Vista.

As we reported earlier Open Source software, particularly Linux is on the rise, as Dell and now HP pushing open source systems as cheaper better alternatives to a market that for years has been dominated by Microsoft corp. (MSFT) Windows proprietary systems.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Desktop will come pre-loaded on the HP dx2250 desktop computer -- an AMD-based model.

The PC itself comes with a range of AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core, Athlon 64 and Sempron processors.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Desktop also comes with
OpenOffice preinstalled, Firefox for web browsing and Evolution for email.

Its no secret that I'm a huge fan of Open Source software,(I use Ubuntu Linux) I think that the overall trend of the industry is just great for consumers, and PC users are the winners.
